The Ins and Outs of Storytelling

I have always loved the power of story! However 'telling' is an art, as well as a skill and as such, can be learned. Here are some tips!

Preparation for Storytelling

Select books that children actually like, there are a lot of popular books, so it's fairly easy to make the right selection. Ensure that the illustrations are large enough for a whole class to view. Consider the genre - e.g. fiction/non fiction.

Tips:

  • Use repeated phrases and gestures (children love joining in!)

  • It's okay to tell the story in your own words, for some of the time

  • Make a story skeleton as part of your preparation - a bulleted summary of the story sequence; this can be done with images

  • Consider using props (as long as it's not too much of a distraction, and there is something for everyone)

Remember!

  1. Read or tell a story at least two or three times a day.

  2. You don't always need a book to tell a story
